2010-2011 has been a year where emerging designers step out from the confines of their workrooms to headline their own collections. The latest spark to enter the scene is Alia Bastamam, who kicked off her eponymous label in understated style with the 2011 Resort Collection. Seven years of fashion exposure, including designing stints at Sofira and Jovian Mandagie, proved worthwhile for a young designer so confident in her own skin she whispered her way into fashion hearts.
Alia Bastamam’s Resort line took on feminine and sleek silhouettes modernised with sport elements in the form of hoods and racerbacks (a rebuttal of sorts to the butch-ish reputation of racerbacks). Flowing drapes and straight lines took turns to define each piece. As do summery hues and neutrals.
The label’s launch had been much anticipated in the weeks leading up to the event, with model line-ups and RSVPs no doubt being thrown back and forth and tweaked to death. Yet none of this chaos would be allowed to leak into the design itself or in the momentous minute the designs were marched out on the runway. Cool, collected and elegant was the execution.
The show was devoid of bold statements and hollow promises often expected at a young designers' glitzy, giddy debut. Instead, it took its time and shared with the crowd of 200 a taste of what’s to come. In the intimate setting of an urban gallery, the audience sat up and took notice.
What was going through your head when you took your bow at the recent fashion show? Was it how you imagined it would be? There was a lot going through my mind on that day and I totally forgot to plan my bow at the end of the show. Thank God everything went well!
Was there anything you didn’t anticipate? It’s such a small thing, yet sticks in my head. The fruit tarts we ordered didn't make it out to guests so my team and I stuffed our faces after the show.
What kind of designer would you want to be known as? A designer who makes beautiful clothes and connects with the consumer through her designs. A designer who is thoughtful :)
Three words your friends commonly use to describe you. Indecisive, a scaredy cat and a closet hippie.
Describe your personal style. Effortless.
Can’t live without my... Sunglasses.
We caught up with Alia Bastamam after the show and shot her these candid questions. True to her style, she answers them sans pretence.
